Vina Panduwinata, also familiarly known as Si Burung Camar (The Seagulls), is one of the most famous Indonesian singers of all time. She was born by a blend of Ambon, Manado, and Banten nature. Because her father worked as a diplomat, Vina was moved around to follow his father's career. Starting from India, Netherlands, then Germany.
At the time of completing high school in Hamburg, Germany, Vina Panduwinata which the full name is Dewi Sastaviyana Panduwinata met songwriter named Richard Vulling, who introduced her to music producer, Bernd Wippich. That’s the moment Vina began to set pace in music industry, professionally. He released two songs titled Java & Single's Bar (1978) and Sorry Sorry & Touch Me (1979), under the auspices of the music label RCA Germany.
Vina returned to Indonesia at 1979, and founded by Mogi Darusman who’s interested with Vina vocal character. Mogi took Vina to get in touch with many record companies, until Jackson Record keen to produce an album for Vina. In 1981, she was released her debut album titled Citra Biru, quoted from the title song's written by James F. Sundah. Since then, Vina Panduwinata began to appear in many broadcast program, include TVRI and Radio Prambors. His name was sticking out.
The second album, Citra Pesona (1982) strengthened her position as a rising star in Indonesia music industry, as music arranger Addie MS involved in the album. Vina also continue to spawn album with Jackson Records until the latest one, Cinta (1986), which is filled with hits like Citra Biru, September Ceria, and Didadaku Ada Kamu. This album also received numerous awards, such as the Golden Awards and BASF.
In addition to her original music albums, Vina also established herself through Festival Lagu Populer Indonesia, which plays a major role in her career. Sequentially, Vina Panduwinata received Outstanding Performance award in 1983, 1984, and 1985. In fact, the song Burung Camar at the festival was also monitored by Yamaha World Popular Song Festival in Japan, and getting Kawakami Award; until Vina was nicknamed Si Burung Camar (The Seagulls).
More than a quarter of century in the music industry, Vina held her first solo concert titled Viva Vina, at JCC Plenary Hall on February 18, 2006. The concert was accompanied by Addie MS and Twilite Orchestra, Dodo Zakaria, Mus Mujiono, and many other. In the same year she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI), for her dedication and achievements in Indonesia’s music industry.
Vina Panduwinata not stopped. She released Kekuatan Cinta at 2010; the album contains twelve tracks, at over 50 years of age. The singer has never tired of work, and we all hoped, her work is lasts forever.
